Balinese Rangda Mask, Carved And Gilded Wood, Bali, Mid-20th Century
Carved from dense tropical wood, this Balinese mask depicts Rangda, the principal demonic figure in Balinese ritual theater, who opposes the Barong in trance dances. The face, with powerfully expressive features and prominent fangs, is crowned with a delicately gilded headdress, accompanied by braided cords made of natural fibers and a fringe of hemp hair.
The deep patina, traces of hand tools, and wear on the gilding indicate a traditional craftsmanship predating modern tourist production, dating from between 1940 and 1970.A piece of remarkable sculptural presence, it illustrates the dramatic and symbolic dimension of Balinese theater, where the mask becomes an instrument of protection and ritual.
