Large Satsuma Earthenware Lamp – Japan, 19th Century – Height: 88 Cm
A significant lamp crafted from a Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase, dating from the 19th century.
The baluster-shaped vase features a rich polychrome and gilded decoration typical of Japanese productions from this period, consisting of numerous lively scenes depicting figures in traditional costumes, set within panels surrounded by a profusion of floral and ornamental motifs.
The delicacy of the decoration, the numerous gold highlights, and the richness of the composition lend this piece a striking decorative presence.
The vase has been converted into a lamp mounted on a gilded bronze base with rocaille decoration, and topped with a substantial brass fixture.
