Gérard Schneider (1896–1986) was one of the leading figures of French lyrical abstraction. Born in Switzerland and trained in Paris, he established himself in the 1940s as a pioneer of European gestural painting, alongside Hartung and Soulages. His works are featured in major international museums and regularly appear in prestigious auctions.

This work on paper, created with ink, gouache, and oil and dated 1984, is an abstract gestural composition of great intensity. The powerful and dynamic black and red forms unfold against a violet-pink background in a movement that is both violent and controlled—a hallmark of the artist’s mature style. A rare and significant work from Schneider’s late period.
