André Marchand (1907–1997) was a French painter and draftsman known for the sensitivity of his lines and the poetry of his figurative compositions. Close to the major movements of French modern art, he developed a body of work marked by gentleness and introspection, particularly in his studies of the human figure.
This ink drawing, with fine lines enhanced by a very light wash, depicts a double study of a female face. The delicacy of the line and the simplicity of the paper bear witness to the artist’s graphic mastery during his mature years.
