20th-century Aubusson Tapestry - Blue Coral, Jean Lurçat - Atelier Suzanne Goubely Gatien - No. 1416

Artist: Jean Lurçat

In keeping with tradition, this magnificent tapestry has undergone a thorough cleaning and meticulous inspection by our experts at the Galerie Lissier artisan workshop. It is now ready to adorn your home

This 20th-century Aubusson tapestry, titled “Corail Bleu” and designed by Jean Lurçat (woven by the Suzanne Goubely-Gatien workshop), showcases the artist’s characteristic visual and poetic style against a deep black background.

At the center of the composition stands a body of water tinged with a vibrant electric blue, streaked with orange coral-like patterns. At its heart, verdant water with clear ripples shelters a school of stylized fish with black and white markings. A waterbird with multicolored plumage dives toward the surface to fish, creating a dynamic movement accentuated by splashes with purple and pinkish highlights.

Surrounding this body of water flourishes a fantastical flora composed of pointed plant structures, leaves with dense graphic patterns, and intertwined corals. The color palette contrasts the warmth of orange, red, and ochre tones with the coolness of blues and purples.

In the lower right corner, true to Lurçat’s symbolic bestiary, a highly colorful owl perches on a branch, observing the scene. In the lower left corner is the artist’s woven signature, “Jean Lurçat,” embroidered in red. The piece perfectly illustrates the renaissance of modern tapestry, blending a cosmic vision, dreamlike fauna, and the virtuosity of traditional weaving.
