Vintage Abstract Wool Wall Tapestry In The Drouin Style, Hand-knotted And Signed By Textile

Large abstract wall tapestry from the 1970s—polychrome wool in relief—signed, in the style of Daniel Drouin – 156 x 140 cm

The composition is based on broad swaths of earth-red, deep black, and ecru, structured around a large central biomorphic form. This form is traversed vertically by several brown-red wool elements worked in relief, while small orange and yellow areas punctuate the lower part of the composition. The contrast between the woven surface, light-colored areas, loose threads, knots, and appliqué elements gives the work as a whole a distinctly sculptural quality.

This work is part of the Nouvelle Tapisserie and Fiber Art movements of the 1960s and 1970s, a period during which many artists moved away from strictly flat surfaces to incorporate reliefs, cords, loose fibers, volumes, and experiments with materials. The visual language is very similar to that developed by Daniel Drouin in his abstract tapestries of the 1970s, both in the use of large blocks of color and in the understated palette and volumetric treatment of the textile.

In terms of its spirit and technique, this piece can also be linked to the major developments in 20th-century contemporary tapestry.

Condition: shows signs of age, with wear, scuffing, small missing areas, pulled threads, and exposed threads in places. Visible wear on certain surface areas as well as on several raised sections.
