Tapestry Depicting The Weighing Of Metal And The Art Of Blacksmithing

This mechanical tapestry, dating from the early 20th century, is a reproduction of a Renaissance tapestry preserved at the Louvre Museum.
The original, made in the Southern Netherlands around 1500–1525, depicts the invention of weighing and the art of forging.
On the left, a figure holds a pair of scales, symbolizing the art of weighing with weights.
On the right, Tubal-Cain, a biblical figure, is shown in front of a forge, working metal.
The scene unfolds in a lush landscape filled with trees, plants, flowers, and numerous animals.
The composition features a rich palette of brown, ochre, and golden tones, characteristic of early tapestry.
The inscription on the left reads: “GIIUARGIIIUS TROVVA LART DE PAISSER AUS POIS.”
It means: “Giohargius discovered the art of weighing with weights.”
The inscription on the right reads: “TEBAQAIH TROVVA LART DE FORGER EN TOUS METAULS.”
It means: “Tubal-Cain discovered the art of forging all metals.”
