Gargoyle, 15th Century, Limestone (upper Part Missing)
Large limestone gargoyle element, 160 cm high x 45 cm wide x 50 cm deep.
It was a decorative element originally set into the ground in a park on a private estate in the Anjou region.
We can make out a figure carved on the front that was originally meant to be carrying another figure on its shoulders.
The top of the figure’s head needs to be reattached.
This was likely a gargoyle that was replaced in the 19th century for safety and functional reasons.
The back of this piece, which was not photographed due to its weight, features a drainage channel leading down to the figure.
It must weigh around 300 kg.
