Pair Of Architectural Paintings With Genre Scenes - Francesco Monti

A refined pair of paintings depicting two architectural scenes with figures, clearly in the Bolognese style, dating from around the first half of the 18th century.

Given the comparisons and indisputable similarities, the works can be attributed with a high degree of certainty to the Bolognese artist Francesco Monti, who was active in the first half of the century in Emilia and northern Italy.

Of excellent painterly quality and still on their original canvas, the possibility cannot be ruled out that the Neapolitan Nunzio Ferraiuoli (who made Bologna his home) may have collaborated on this “joint effort.”

The very elegant and elongated figures, typical of the work of the famous Gargiulo, known as Micco Spadaro, in fact lend support to this intriguing hypothesis.

The works depict evocative architectural caprices animated by elegant figures and scenes of daily life. In the first painting, a majestic, monumental interior punctuated by arches and columns welcomes figures engaged in conversation and movement, immersed in a theatrical atmosphere of great perspectival depth. The second features a setting of classical ruins and fantastical architecture, illuminated by intense light effects emanating from a large hearth—an element that lends the composition a strong dramatic impact.

From an important private collection, these balanced and elegant works are accompanied by their contemporary gilded wooden frames.

A pair of great elegance and prestige, ideal for collectors and formal settings, capable of evoking the theatrical flair and perspectival ingenuity of 18th-century Italian painting.
