A Porcelain Coffee Cup And Saucer From The Mousseline à Pied Set By Jean Pouyat, Limoges.
Jean Pouyat factory in Limoges.
- The La céramique catalog tells us that there are two types of Mousseline sets: One is the Mousseline without the pedestal,
and the other is the Mousseline with a pedestal.
- This coffee cup and saucer belong to the latter type.
- First presented in 1862 in the La céramique catalog (cat. no. 31) by the Pouyat factory, the Mousseline set with a foot was
clearly a great success and appears to have been widely distributed.
- A continuous band of white fleurs-de-lis with green and gold foliage on a blue background.
- Curved cup handle.
- Gold-leaf borders and fillets on the cup’s foot, handle, and rim, as well as on the rim and center of the saucer.
- The interior of the coffee cup and the central circle of the saucer are white.
- The porcelain is translucent and delicate, like an eggshell, and a perfect white a secret mastered by the Pouyat family,
who at the time rivaled the whites produced by the Sèvres National Porcelain Manufactory.
– This white color was achieved using kaolin from the Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche mine in Haute-Vienne, which was owned by the
Pouyat family.
– Among their clients was the Sèvres National Porcelain Manufactory, to which they supplied kaolin.
– Signed in chrome green with the factory’s fine-line stamp: J.P.L. for Jean Pouyat Limoges beneath the cup and the saucer.
– Date: late 19th century, circa 1870–1890.
