Berthe Savigny Colored Earthenware Baby Sitting With A Book And A Biscuit Hb Quimper Factory.

Artist: Berthe Savigny (1882-1958)

- Berthe Savigny, a seated Breton baby in polychrome earthenware from the HB Quimper factory (the large Hubaudière factory),
a book with its left hand, holding a biscuit in its right, dressed in a polka-dot shirt, trousers, and a bonnet with polka dots around the edge of the bonnet, and wearing clogs.
- Signed under the base in black: B.SAVIGNY HB Quimper, the letter P for the workshop manager, and the number 1066 for the model.
- Period: second quarter of the 20th century, around 1930-1935. Berthe Savigny was a French sculptor and painter born in Quimper on July 30, 1882, and died on November 14, 1958, in Pont-Aven.
Born into a family of artists, Berthe Savigny specialized in creating babies and statuettes in earthenware, stoneware, and terracotta.
Her works, primarily composed of babies and ceramic statues, left their mark on the city of Quimper.
The practice of art allowed Berthe Savigny, who suffered partial deafness following an accident, to overcome her social isolation.
Her works mainly depict children.
Her babies met with great success from 1926 onwards, which led to her contact with the renowned HB pottery factory in Quimper.
From this prestigious company, HB produced 18 models in series.
The HB factory tried to sign Berthe Savigny to a contract but was never successful due to a lack of agreement. - However, starting in 1937, she signed a contract with a pottery factory in Malicorne, Sarthe, to produce two dolls of babies.
- The Susse Frères foundry in Paris distributed some of her terracotta works.
- In total, the artist created 70 doll models.
- A street in Quimper is named after her in her memory.
- A similar model is on display in the collections of the Breton Pottery Museum in Quimper.
