It consists of an openwork bronze receptacle supported by four sphinx heads resting on lion's paws. The base is made of crystal, cut with very sharp diamond-point facets on the upper section. This base rests on four gadrooned bronze ball feet. Originally, the piece likely featured a dual-tone finish—gilt and silver. It shows signs of wear consistent with its age. There are a few minor chips on the crystal base, though these do not detract from the piece's overall quality.
The piece bears the "Baccarat" stamp on the bronze underside.
For context, Baccarat produced gilt bronze and crystal pieces in this style—featuring sphinx heads, lion's paws, thick diamond-cut crystal bases, and gadrooned ball feet—between 1850 and 1870.
