Kapala – Tibetan Libation Cup Made Of Skull And Silver, Late 19th–early 20th Century
A rare kapala, or Tibetan libation cup, made from a skull cap mounted on silver.
Its rim is adorned with a remarkable frieze of small carved skulls, set within a silver mount. The interior of the cup is entirely lined with repoussé silver. The exterior retains the natural lines of the cranial sutures, highlighted by a dark material.
In Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, the kapala is a ritual object symbolizing the impermanence of existence and detachment from the material world.
