Large Enameled Glass Diabolo Vase, Theodore Legras, Art Nouveau Style, Ivy, 1900

Antique single-flower glass vase by Théodore Legras (1839–1916).
A remarkable decorative piece from the Art Nouveau period, circa 1900.
Diabolo-shaped, the design combines a frosted background in subtle shades of beige and salmon pink with a polychrome enameled floral pattern.
Long stems of carnations unfold gracefully across the body, while friezes of ivy leaves adorn the neck and lower section.

Théodore Legras (1839–1916), born in the Vosges, was one of the great French glassmakers of the late 19th century. Based in Saint-Denis, where he ran a major glassworks, he developed an extremely diverse range of artistic glassware. His creations are notably distinguished by their enameled, engraved, or painted designs, inspired by flora, landscapes, and Japonism. Featured in major exhibitions of the late 19th century, Legras’s glassworks were highly successful and today hold a recognized place in the decorative arts of the Art Nouveau period.
