Of Armenian origin and a naturalized French citizen, Edgar Chahine (1874–1947) was one of the most important French painters and printmakers of the early 20th century. Oil and tempera, charcoal, pastel, and colored pencils, as well as etching and drypoint, were among the media he used to capture his favorite subjects. Among these was Paris during the Belle Époque. Chahine was a prolific printmaker; today, four hundred twenty-nine of his works are cataloged (some of which were created to illustrate works by authors as diverse as Anatole France, Octave Mirbeau, Barrès, Huysmans, and Colette).
