Pair Of Neoclassical Candlesticks, Augsburg, 1795–1797

Respective weights of the candlesticks: 315 and 303 g.Hallmarked by the master silversmith as well as with the oval-shaped hallmark of the city of Augsburg, depicting a pine cone accompanied by the letter H, a mark in use between 1795 and 1797.
The candlesticks rest on square plinths and rounded, molded circular bases. The shafts, truncated conical in shape and fluted, taper toward the top before extending into a vase-shaped section, partially gadrooned, ending in a rim that forms a smooth plinth. This section is further adorned with floral garlands in half-relief. Above them sit the cylindrical candle holders designed to hold the candles, complete with their original removable candle sockets.
These candlesticks represent one of the most sought-after and widespread designs among the silver candlesticks produced in the goldsmith workshops of Central and Northern Europe in the late 18th century. Exemplars featuring very similar decoration were produced notably by master silversmiths in Augsburg, Frankfurt, and Breslau.
ABOUT THE SILVERSMITH
Johann Rudolf Haller was born in Strasbourg in 1757. Through his marriage to Elisabeth Susanna Hackenauer, he became part of a family with a long tradition in the goldsmith’s trade.
