Portrait Of George Washington, Signed By Armand-dumaresq (dated 1878)

Artist: Edouard Armand-dumaresq

This portrait of George Washington is a particularly accomplished work of genuine historical significance. Dated 1878 and signed by the artist, it is personally dedicated to his friend Hervé Mangon, who served as French Minister of Agriculture in Henri Brisson’s government from April to November 1885.

Charles Édouard Armand-Dumaresq was a French painter and illustrator born on January 1, 1826, in Paris and who died in the same city on March 6, 1895. He was best known as a painter of historical scenes and battle scenes during the Second Empire and the Third Republic

Armand-Dumaresq’s fame rests in particular on his iconic work, *The Signing of the Declaration of Independence*, a version of which is preserved and on display in the Cabinet Room of the White House, reflecting the enduring esteem in which his work is held in the United States.

His works are also represented in the collections of the National Museum of Franco-American Cooperation in Blérancourt, thus underscoring the special place his work holds in the artistic and historical relations between France and the United States.

On the reverse side of the canvas is a stamp from the canvas supplier “Dubus”
