First-class Relic Of Saint Clement Mary Hofbauer – Ex Ossibus

A remarkable Roman Catholic relic of Saint Clement Maria Hofbauer (1751–1820), priest, missionary, and one of the leading figures of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. He was beatified in 1888 and later canonized by Pope Pius X in 1909.

In the center is a clearly visible bone fragment, mounted on a pink silk background and protected by glass. The original Latin labels bear the following inscriptions:

“Ex oss.”—an abbreviation of ex ossibus, meaning “from the bones.”

“S. Clem. Hof’b.”—an abbreviation of Sancti Clementis Hofbauer, meaning “of Saint Clement Hofbauer.”

It is therefore a first-class relic.

The reverse side of the reliquary retains its original ecclesiastical seal in red wax as well as its red sealing cords. The seal and threads are intact. The fine cracks visible in the old wax are due to age and have not compromised the seal’s closure.

The reliquary is housed in an oval protective metal case with a removable lid. This outer case can be opened normally without touching the ecclesiastical seal or the guarantee threads.

The exterior shows patina, discoloration, and signs of age. No silver hallmarks were found; the material is therefore cautiously described as white metal or silver-plated metal.

Probably made during the first half of the 20th century, after the canonization of Clement-Marie Hofbauer in 1909.

Condition: good vintage condition. The glass, interior, bone fragment, Latin labels, guarantee threads, and ecclesiastical seal are all present. The original wax shows age-related crazing, but the seal remains intact. The relic is not accompanied by its certificate of authenticity, traditionally called an “authentic.”

An unusual devotional and collector’s item, containing an important relic ex ossibus that is clearly visible.
