After studying political science and law, this son of a porcelain painter became a lawyer. For his doctoral dissertation, he wrote on the subject of copyright in painting and sculpture. After World War I, from which he returned seriously wounded, he devoted himself entirely to the arts, which he had already been practicing since around 1905. Beginning in 1914, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, primarily landscapes, but he was an artistic jack-of-all-trades. From glasswork and ceramics to bookbinding and the creation of bookplates, Ballet appears to have possessed a wide range of skills that he developed throughout his life.
Our small panel, created in Corrèze, depicts a fresh landscape on the outskirts of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. The river flows to the right, and the viewpoint shows us the hills overlooking the town of Altillac. The pastel tones, applied with long brushstrokes, lend the work a powerful rhythm.
