Vintage "ragots" Candlesticks From The Restoration Period

Pair of so-called “Ragot” candlesticks in gilded bronze from the period. Restored. Set on a concave triangular base, they feature a tripod foot with lion’s paws ending in finely chiseled claws, decorated with palmettes. A band chiseled with leaves and striations encircles the bulbous, pot-bellied shaft—hence the name “ragot”—which features alternating gadroons and smooth lines. The bowl rests on a ring with oblique striations; it features alternating recessed fluting and carved lines to mirror the design of the body! The original candle holders are present, with striations around the rim.

“Ragot” is an 18th-century term used to describe a person of short stature with a prominent belly! At a dinner table, such people were often seated at the end of the table. The term has stuck to describe small candlesticks with bulbous shafts placed at the end of the table to complement the candelabras placed in the center!
