Sculpture Depicting A Musician Putto

An elegant sculpture depicting a cherub musician playing a small reed instrument, a fine example of French decorative art from the Directoire period, between the late 18th century and the very early 19th century.
The figure, modeled with great attention to anatomical accuracy and the softness of a child’s form, is depicted seated in a spontaneous and graceful pose, with his head slightly tilted and his gaze focused on the musical instrument. The putto is accompanied by a small dog and a rabbit, elements that lend the composition a playful and pastoral character.
The sculpture is made of burnished bronze, embellished with refined gilded details, particularly evident in the musical instrument and the ornamental elements, creating an elegant chromatic contrast with the dark patina of the bronze.
The work rests on a grand architectural base made of Verde delle Alpi marble, consisting of two overlapping tiers separated by a gilded bronze frame. The lower, rectangular base is supported by four small, finely decorated gilded bronze spherical feet.
The piece masterfully combines the austerity of the neoclassical forms of the Directoire period with the more charming and sentimental style of the musical putto, resulting in an object of great sculptural quality and decorative refinement, particularly well-suited for a collection of period antiques or a formal setting.
