Large Sculpted Group In Two-toned Serpentine Depicting Budai And An Arhat With A Celestial Lion
This imposing two-tone serpentine sculpture, created around 1920 (Republican period, 1900–1949), weighs 8.5 kg and measures 25 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. The artisan skillfully capitalized on the stone’s natural contrast, juxtaposing a dark, greenish tone with a translucent light gray hue. The scene depicts Budai, the Laughing Buddha, recognizable by his cheerful face, bare chest, and rosary, seated alongside a meditating Arhat. A reclining guardian lion and a young lion cub complete this composition. A symbol of good fortune, serenity, and spiritual protection, this piece exemplifies remarkable Chinese craftsmanship of the period.
