but its design suggests it was crafted in the second half of the 19th century, during the Napoleonic III period

Original mercury gilding from the first half of the 19th century—during the Empire or Restoration periods—generally shows signs of wear and a more matte patina
The brilliance and uniformity of this gilding suggest the work of a master bronze artist, a style developed from the 1840s–1850s onward
A very well-preserved 19th-century gilding
