Pair Of Wrought-iron Lounge Chairs Upholstered In Cowhide – Made In France, Circa 1940–1950

Pair of large black-lacquered wrought-iron lounge chairs, French, mid-20th century, circa 1940–1950.

Their particularly graphic structure consists of round iron posts with supple and dynamic lines, enlivened by wide coils forming the armrests. The crossed legs are joined at the front by small decorative brass cabochons.

The high, deeply sloped backs naturally extend into the seat, in a design reminiscent of a chaise longue or lounge chair. The upholstery consists of wide strips of full-grain cowhide in natural shades of brown, black, and white, creating a particularly decorative contrast with the black frame.

The very slender profile, the curves of the wrought iron, and the simplicity of the construction place this pair within the tradition of French designer furniture from the 1940s–1950s—a period still marked by neoclassical tastes while foreshadowing a more modern aesthetic.

In good overall condition. Some signs of use and minor wear consistent with its age. The leather upholstery was added after the frames were constructed.
