View Of Avignon In The 19th Century. Attributed To Dunant-vallier (1818–1888).

Here is a very interesting work. Not only is it of high quality, but it is also a highly significant historical document concerning the history of the city of Avignon.
The painting is attributed to and identified on the back of the stretcher as Jean-Marc Dunant-Vallier, known as Marc Dunant. Geneva, 1818–1888. A Swiss painter and student of Alexandre Calame and Guignon—the founder of a veritable dynasty of painters—he worked in Italy (primarily Venice and Rome) and made several trips to Provence. He chose his subjects either from the highly romantic shores of Italian lakes or from the villages—bathed in harsh light—of southern France, Umbria, Tuscany, and Veneto. Our painting was executed on heavy paper, mounted on an original canvas. There are a few minor restorations and two or three small cracks in the (lightweight) paper. The dimensions of the canvas alone are 52 cm x 39 cm. It is presented in a beautiful 19th-century frame measuring 72.5 cm x 60 cm.
