18th-century Indian Painting (nantes?) Featuring Chinoiserie, Flowers, And Butterflies, 216 X 180 Cm

A significant and attractive 18th-century printed fabric known as “Indienne”, composed of several joined panels 59 cm wide, featuring a remarkable block-printed design on a caramel-beige background.

The ornamentation alternates between broad floral bands enlivened by sumptuous blooms, butterflies, insects, and stylized foliage, with narrower bands decorated with vases of flowers and charming scenes of Chinoiserie, a theme particularly popular in European decorative arts during the second half of the 18th century.

The color palette, which remains very fresh, harmoniously combines shades of pink, turquoise blue, deep blue, and light brown against an elegant, warm beige background, lending the whole a strong decorative impact.

The antique weave and the width of the strips confirm that it was produced in the 18th century. This large piece is a rare testament to the European taste for the Orient and chinoiserie, which was then widely prevalent in French Indian fabric manufactories.

The Nantes textile mills were renowned for their highly elaborate compositions, blending figures, exotic scenes, flowers, and themes inspired by the Chinese aesthetic of the time. Archives show that Nantes-style Indian fabrics were distinguished precisely by the narrative and decorative richness of their motifs.

Preserved in excellent overall condition, this Indian fabric can be used as a wall hanging, a decorative panel, or a collector’s item dedicated to antique textiles.

A large-scale decorative piece, particularly luminous and highly sought after for use in distinctive interiors.
