Pair Of Wall Sconces Featuring Fô Dogs, Made Of Gilded Bronze And Porcelain

A pair of 18th-century-style wall sconces, consisting of a turquoise-colored porcelain statuette depicting a Fô dog seated on its pedestal and resting on a gilded bronze base.
Two chiseled gilded bronze arms extend from this base; the entire piece is decorated in the Directoire style.
This is a “true” pair of wall sconces, with the two Fô dogs facing each other; the male holds the “ball of happiness” under one paw, while the female holds her “cub” under her paw.
The Fô dogs were placed at the entrances to Chinese temples as protectors, their appearance intended to ward off evil spirits.
These depictions were quickly incorporated into 18th-century decorative objects, which were eager for chinoiserie motifs—to which these wall sconces are a reference.
The porcelain is in perfect condition, and the gilded bronze has retained all its luster.
These wall sconces are entirely in keeping with the style of Maison Jansen’s production (circa 1950).
