Pair Of Polychrome Terracotta *majos* – Spain, 19th Century
A charming sculptural group in cold-painted terracotta depicting a
pair of "*Majo* and *Maja*" figures—iconic characters of Andalusian
folk tradition (Spain). The sculpture is distinguished by the exceptional richness and
vivacity of its modeling: the young man wears a traditional Andalusian
outfit embellished with gold and blue relief patterns and a richly
detailed red cape draped over his shoulders, while the young woman
is portrayed in a light, draped gown, holding the quintessential fan.
The piece—characterized by its hollow interior and vibrant polychromy—
can be attributed to the renowned "*Barros Malagueños*" workshops
or the Granada school of sculpture from the second half of the 19th century.
A striking piece for both display and collecting, preserved in excellent
period condition with its original patina.
