1923 Scottish Silver Boot-shaped Inkwell Military Souvenir
A very beautiful and rare military item from World War I. It is a horse shoe converted into an inkwell by a prominent Scottish firm named Mackay & Chisholm of Edinburgh
. It is the shoe of a horse from the
Inniskilling Dragoons regiment, which, according to the name inscribed on the lid, was named “Linlithgom.” Based on my research, this was an Australian horse that landed in Marseille in 1914 to serve in the war. Upon its death, its horseshoe was mounted as an inkwell as a tribute to this war hero. A very beautiful, almost historical keepsake. Its dimensions are 9 cm in height and a base measuring approximately 13 x 15 centimeters.
The horseshoe and its mount are made of silver-plated metal.
The silver mount bears the city silversmith’s hallmarks, the date, and the sterling silver hallmark. Please note that a small silver prong holding the mount is missing, as is the original name on the front. Nothing too significant. For more information, please contact me.
