Rectangular box with four legs, featuring a beveled lid centered with a design of peonies (botan) in gold maki-e — it is known as the queen of flowers and is associated with feminine beauty, honor, wealth, and nobility. The side panels are likely adorned with the seven poetic plants of autumn (aki no nanakusa) in maki-e. Notably, these include carnations (nadeshiko)—a symbol of delicacy and understated elegance—lespedeza or Japanese clover (hagi), and yellow patrinia (ominaeshi), “the ladies’ flower”—evoking melancholic grace, fidelity, and understated feminine beauty. The interior is finished in nashiji lacquer.
