*Animal sculptor, Charles Virion (1865–1945) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy before enrolling at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1885.
His chickens, cat, and other animals attest to the artist’s technical mastery and his long mornings spent observing animals.
Introduced to nature at a very early age by his father, Gustave Louis Alexis Virion, a Water and Forestry Inspector, he drew inspiration from his visits to Parisian zoos, particularly the Jardin des Plantes. A devoted observer of nature, he complemented his repertoire of exotic animals with common species, such as the chickens at his home in Montigny-sur-Loing, where he had his studio built and lived with his family.
