Senoufo Female Statue Sitting On Her Stool Called Tugubele Ivory Coast African Art
Artist: Inconnu
Large statuette called Tugubele representing a woman sitting on a stool, the hands surrounding the navel, the hornbill headdress, the prominent mouth with visible teeth are typical of Senufo* representations. Our figure was probably brought back around 1950, there are still annotations on the stool where we can read: Ivory Coast, Senoufo, Kalembele brotherhood of pozo A82.
I think that this brotherhood must rather be the Poro brotherhood.
No visible restoration, sold as is.

*The Sénoufo (or Siéna, the name they give themselves, or even Sénéfo, Séné, Syénambélé or Bamana) constitute a population of West Africa which comprises around thirty subgroups, shared between southern Mali (mainly in the Sikasso region), Burkina Faso and northern Ivory Coast, where Korhogo, their main center, is located. The Senoufo people are one of the largest peoples of Côte d'Ivoire, representing nearly 10% of the population.
The Sénoufo represent approximately 1,500,000 people divided into more than thirty subgroups.
Each subgroup has its own characteristics but they share several cultural traits that make them unified: language, surnames, social and religious organization.
