Pair Of Armchairs By Gustave Serrurier-bovy

Gustave Serrurier-Bovy was born in Liège in 1858 into a family of cabinetmakers. Regarded as one of the pioneers of modern design, he developed an interest at an early age in a new approach to furniture design, emphasising simplicity of form, functionality and the adaptation of furniture to everyday life.

Influenced in particular by the ideas of William Morris, he developed a personal aesthetic based on clean lines, high-quality craftsmanship and a constant quest for balance between form, function and comfort. Far removed from the decorative exuberance then in vogue, Serrurier-Bovy thus contributed, from the late 19th century onwards, to the emergence of furniture that heralded the principles of modern design.

His success enabled him to expand his business in Belgium and abroad, notably in Brussels, Paris and The Hague.

This pair of armchairs on castors, created in 1902, illustrates this approach particularly well. The wooden frame, the design of the armrests and the mobile base reflect a quest for simplicity and practicality, whilst the overall proportions lend the piece a genuine sense of harmony.
