Javan Stag, Antoine-louis Barye (1795–1875)

Artist: Barye

Artist's cast made by Susse for Barye, bearing the artist's mark from the 1850s.
Very fine quality casting, with light chiseling and patina.
Most likely cast from the original plaster model; numbers in black ink on the reverse: 8436 / 350.
The date 1838 appears on the bronze, which places the earliest dated proofs around 1838.
The only known example of this model produced by Susse at the time of its creation.
It can be inferred that this is a trial cast or a commission from Barye to the Susse firm that did not result in a production run, since Barye produced this model until his death and thus retained the rights to it.
H.: 134 mm — W.: 162 mm — D.: 38 mm

History of the Susse firm:
In 1830, the Susse firm was elevated to the rank of Purveyor to Queen Marie-Amélie (wife of King Louis-Philippe) and Princess Louise, their daughter—who married King Leopold I of the Belgians in 1832—and then, in 1847, to the rank of Purveyor to the Duke of Montpensier. Susse editions from this period are rare and of remarkable quality.
1850s: “SUSSE Fʳᵉˢ” mark, stamped seal.
