17th-century Gouache On Vellum Depicting A Peruvian Hyacinth

The Vélins du Roi collection was started in 1631 by Gaston d'Orléans, brother of King Louis XIII, to document the rare plants cultivated in his gardens at the Château de Blois. The project was subsequently taken over by the Crown and continued for centuries. Master illustrators such as Nicolas Robert, Claude Aubriet, and later Pierre-Joseph Redouté contributed thousands of these standardized paintings on vellum. Uniform gold and ink borders were strictly applied so that the works—spanning different eras and artists—would form a coherent visual encyclopedia. Today, the majority of this monumental collection is housed at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
