Antique Japanese Bowl With "plique-à-jour" Enamel Decoration Featuring Koi Carp

Artist: Technique Ando Jubei (1876-1953) Et Kawade Shibataro (1856-1921)
Japanese bowl decorated with koi carp swimming in an aquatic setting.

Early 20th-century piece in a technique known as plique-à-jour enamel.
The plique-à-jour technique is said to have been introduced and developed in Japan by Ando Jubei (1876–1953) and Kawade Shibataro (1856–1921), after seeing a French piece at the Paris Exposition around 1900.
It is known as shotai-jippo, which means cloisonné without a support (the metal body is dissolved after firing and polishing). The technique is notoriously difficult and labor-intensive. It was rarely used to create large pieces because surface tension tends to cause the enamel to crack.
