19th-century Bisson Hussar Military Bisque Porcelain Figurine

Stunning military hussar figurine by Bisson, made of biscuit porcelain

Probably from the early 19th century

A hussar in the Revolutionary Army, Bisson is said to have distinguished himself during the Battle of Fleurus in 1794; the statuette is inscribed on the base “Fleurus 1794,” and his name appears on the back: “Bisson Hussar”

It is very finely crafted; the facial expression is superbly rendered, as are the details of the uniform—which are rarely so finely detailed.

There are two minor imperfections (a very small chip at the end of a braid and the plume is missing from the shako)

Height: 29.5 cm

No visible manufacturer’s mark; possibly a biscuit porcelain piece from Sèvres. A similar statuette made of Sèvres terracotta is known to exist, but this particular biscuit porcelain model appears to be impossible to find
