Samuel Lipchytz (1880–1943) was born during the reign of Tsar Alexander II in the heart of the Polish provinces of Imperial Russia. Like Soutine, Chagall, Chana Orloff, Zadkine, and Kikoïne, Samuel Lipchytz was one of the leading figures of the Russian Jewish School of Paris. (This school brought together artists from Eastern Europe who came to Paris to paint or sculpt in the first half of the 20th century.)
As a young sculptor, Samuel Lipchytz traveled to Paris to complete his training. From the very beginning, he was part of the “Ruche” movement, the artists’ community founded in Montparnasse by the sculptor Alfred Boucher. His taste for refinement and the celebration of feminine beauty led him to favor precious materials such as bronze, and even onyx and exotic woods. The new aesthetic that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s allowed him to reach his full potential. His sculptures of dancers, along with those of Chiparus, became icons of the Art Deco movement. A lover of perfection, he took care to always create each piece in multiple materials and with various patinas in order to come as close as possible to the essence of his vision. But, as a true sculptor, he knew how to transcend the dictates of Art Deco fashion and imprinted the mark of his personality on each of his works: one instinctively recognizes a Samuel Lipchytz by the joie de vivre and the wholesome, joyful sensuality that radiate from it. He also creates sumptuous pieces of furniture that serve as the perfect settings for his sculptures.
