Mahogany Notary Document Box With 8 Compartments, Circa 1850
This period piece is a notary’s file cabinet (sometimes called a file cabinet or desk organizer) from the 19th century (the Louis-Philippe or Napoleon III period). It is a narrow column made of precious wood veneer that closes with a side flap secured by a key (a locking mechanism designed to protect the notary’s confidential files).
- The boxes (cartons): It includes 8 removable storage boxes that have been restored. Their fronts are covered in dark green leather (or black with a patina) adorned with a gilded peripheral frieze featuring small ironwork details. Each box has a small brass pull knob in the center.
- Carpentry: The frame is made of mahogany (or mahogany veneer), topped with a classic cornice with a rounded edge and resting on a solid rectangular baseboard.
- Visible condition: The piece appears to be complete and in excellent condition. The gilding on the leather is still clearly visible, which is a major plus, as restoring or replacing old compartments is expensive; the value of a compartmental cabinet depends primarily on the number of compartments, the quality of the leather, and the type of wood.
