A superb and iconic Art Nouveau-era side table or tripod guéridon created by Émile Gallé, master of the School of Nancy.
This highly sought-after piece features a poly-lobed, gently rounded tabletop adorned with a marquetry design of exceptional finesse. It depicts a Gallic rooster crowing at the rising sun, standing proudly on its spurs, its plumage remarkably rendered through the interplay of precious woods in varied shades—walnut, elm burl, and stained wood.
Beyond the technical prowess of the cabinetmaking, this highly symbolic motif—the dawning of day, rebirth, and patriotic pride—reflects the politically engaged period of the master glassmaker and cabinetmaker from Nancy in the late 19th century.
A beautiful Japanese-inspired signature featuring a stylized loop inlaid into the woodwork at the bottom left of the tabletop.
The three tapered, fluted legs, adorned with turned, molded rings, lend lightness and elegance to the piece as a whole. The structure beneath the tabletop retains its original triangular bracing.
