Monastic Door Knocker, Late 17th Century, Louis XIV Period.
The upper vertical section forms a heraldic Latin cross or a bell tower with a crossbar. This simple yet highly symbolic motif served to immediately signal the sacred or clerical nature of the building (monastery, convent, or rectory). The presence of the heart at the bottom links this motif directly to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In religious iconography, the cross represents Faith, and the heart embodies Charity. Placing these two symbols on the door knocker signaled to travelers and the needy that this place was guided by the love of God and ready to offer shelter or alms.
In good overall condition. One screw is missing, as shown in the photos.
Height 21 cm, width 17 cm.
