The port of Ondarroa lacks all the lyrical charm and idyllic scenery that city-dwelling vacationers seek for their August postcards. It is, let’s say it right away, a rugged port, a pure product of hard labor, where the Bay of Biscay crashes against the breakwaters with the relentless obstinacy of reality. Here, the landscape exudes the very scents of maritime life: salted fish, diesel, moldy nets, and the thick grease oozing from the sardines at the market. The men who live here do not stroll along the docks to admire the sunset, but move forward with heavy steps, their feet clad in rubber boots and their shoulders hunched by the waves of the Cantabrian Sea. Their faces are sculpted by the sea air; their sullen gravity and their terse, hoarse speech are the result of centuries of battling storms. From the compact cluster of fishing boats, pressed against the stones of the pier, emerges a raw beauty—an aesthetic of labor and physical effort that is deeply moving in its total absence of sentimentality: Ondárroa is simply a workshop of iron and wood, built at the mouth of the sea, where life is earned each morning through sheer willpower alone, without the slightest concession to nostalgia.
