Antique patinated terracotta faun head, a French piece from the Art Deco period, circa 1925–1935.
The young faun is depicted with his face slightly tilted, his eyes downcast, and his lips curving into a subtle smile.
His pointed ears identify him as this mythological figure, while his hairstyle is particularly stylized.
The simplified rendering of the face, the elegant elongation of the neck, and the geometric design of the hairstyle are characteristic of the revival of subjects inspired by antiquity during the interwar period.
The sculpture rests on a base that forms an integral part of the work and bears the engraved signature “H. Bargas” on the side.

Henri Bargas was a French sculptor born in Paris, active primarily during the 1920s and 1930s. Trained under the sculptor André-César Vermare, he moved in Parisian artistic circles and collaborated notably with Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann as well as with the animal sculptor Édouard-Marcel Sandoz. He also studied animals at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. In the 1930s, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. His work, characteristic of the Art Deco period, includes female figures, animal subjects, and compositions inspired by Greek antiquity. His work notably reflects the influence of Antoine Bourdelle, evident in his athletic figures and classical subjects.
