Adam Smith (1723–1790) is a Scottish philosopher and economist, considered the father of modern economics. Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, he studied moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow, then at Oxford. In 1759, he published his first major work, "The Theory of Moral Sentiments", in which he explored the nature of human morality, sympathy, and social behavior. His most famous work, "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" (1776), is a founding text of political economy. In it, he developed the principles of economic liberalism, such as: the division of labor, the invisible hand of the market, and free trade. Adam Smith advocated an economy governed by the natural laws of supply and demand, with minimal government intervention. He died in Edinburgh in 1790. His ideas profoundly influenced Western economic thought and remain fundamental to this day.
