In the tradition of 16th- and 17th-century Spanish sacred art, the placement of the tabernacle at the center of the main altarpiece gave rise to a delicate pictorial expression: the decoration of its small doors with Eucharistic iconography of a liturgical and contemplative nature. Since the door served as the physical and symbolic threshold protecting the consecrated hosts, Renaissance and Baroque painters decorated these wooden surfaces—often small and surmounted by a semicircular arch—with figures of the Risen Christ, the Vir Dolorum, or heavenly beings in perpetual adoration. The depiction of an angel holding a thurible, solemnly lighting incense inside the tabernacle where the Blessed Sacrament rests, embodies this ritual function: the smoke from the incense evokes the prayers of the faithful rising to heaven and the veneration of the Eucharistic mystery. Thus, these freestanding works served not only as a protective barrier but also as a visual extension of liturgical worship, inviting the viewer to mystical contemplation.
