Bathed in a golden light, almost palpable—that same enchanting radiance that, a century earlier, had dazzled Delacroix and imprinted a timeless exoticism on his retina— the painting unfolds a monumental and theatrical architecture, dominated at its center by the majestic arch of a curved doorway that opens, like a threshold between two worlds, onto the blinding brilliance of the souk. In the foreground, both shaded and sensuous, sheltered from the stifling heat, the inhabitants of the medina crowd together in a silent drama: beggars wrapped in copper-colored rags, hieratic marabouts lost in prayer, and merchants spreading the soft, tactile texture of their rugs on the cool stone. It is a composition in which the dense heat, the scent of myrrh, and the dust in the air blend into a languid and sumptuous atmosphere, forever capturing the West’s fascination with this mythical Orient—a place that is at once a mystical twilight and a radiant splendor.
