Cuban Avant-garde School (c. 1960) - National Art School Of La Habana
Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Impeccable pointillist technique.
The Cubanacán National Art Schools stand like a stone manifesto of utopian optimism, where brick and terracotta abandon their inertia to dance to the rhythm of a newly conquered sovereignty. Conceived by the telluric vision of Fidel and Che on the lawn of the former Country Club, these brick domes and vaults, the work of Porro, Gottardi and Garatti, represent the culmination of an organic architecture blending into the jungle, defying the rigidity of Soviet functionalism that would later attempt to silence them. Although oblivion and vegetation reclaimed their walls for decades, the spirit of the School of Visual Arts and Ballet remained latent in the mastery of figures such as Tomás Sánchez and José Luis Cortés, confirming that these structures were not mere buildings, but cradles of an indomitable avant-garde. Today, declared a National Monument, its sinuous forms radiate their universal value from Havana, reminding us of that sacred moment in 1961 when the Revolution decreed that beauty was not a privilege, but a revolutionary right inscribed in the very soil of Cuba.
