Here is a young boy standing in a bucolic scene rendered in white enamel on the lid of this small pink glass box. The story goes that an English woman lost her two children in a fire in the 19th century. Following this tragedy, she developed this enamel painting technique and, for the rest of her life, created enamel paintings depicting her daughter and son on all kinds of glass items; these are known as “Mary Gregory” pieces.
