19th Century Opaline "rice Grain" Night Glass In "uraline" Color
Dating from the Napoleon III era, this is a set known as a "night glass." It was intended for the bedside table and for nighttime refreshments. It consists of three pieces: a plate, a glass, and a carafe that are stacked one on top of the other. Its distinctive and rare color is the result of a fusion technique using uranium oxide. This uranium comes from the Ural region, hence the name "uraline," and it has the unique characteristic of being dichroic, shifting between green and yellow depending on the light.
