Saintonge-style Wedding Sideboard Made Of Cherry Wood—18th Century

A very beautiful Saintonge wedding sideboard in cherry wood, dating from the late 18th century, featuring a particularly ornate and elegantly crafted front, characteristic of regional cabinetmaking in Saintonge.

Crafted from cherry wood, this piece captivates first and foremost with the striking presence of its front, enlivened by numerous molded and carved elements. The two central doors are framed by projecting moldings with scrolled lines, forming large, dynamic panels that create a very attractive decorative effect. This interplay of curves is echoed in the lower crossbar, which is itself heavily scroll-carved and undulating, its center adorned with a delicate basket filled with flowers and foliage, a particularly charming motif.

The upper section features two large drawers, adorned with original bronze or brass hardware, whose openwork motifs combine scrollwork, foliage, and decorative panels. Of particular note are the ears of wheat that enrich the drawers’ decoration: a traditional symbol of prosperity, fertility, and abundance, they take on their full meaning here on a wedding chest.

The doors also feature beautiful ornamental hardware, with original handles and decorative elements, which accentuate the composition of the panels. The posts and side panels are also carefully molded, giving the piece as a whole a structure that is both sturdy and elegant.

The piece rests on four curved legs topped with small scrolls,

which blend seamlessly into the overall silhouette of the cabinet.
